Soldat drama. I mean, everyone laughs about it. Hell, even the phrase is just ridiculous. How can there be any DRAMA on an online game? It's not like it's a soap opera or something.. But after awhile, you realize that it exists.
Is Soldat a game? Yes. Is Soldat -just- a game? No. Then again, I've found that this can just widely differ. To some people, it can be just a game. Just like golf is just a game, football is just a game, et cetera. But then again, there's people that play competatively. For example, Russel. No bad about him, he's a very good player. I'll admit that. He plays to win. Is Soldat just a game to him? I don't think so. Sandman. Look at how much he whines about SoS dying because so many people think/thought/believe/swear that they hacked. Is Soldat just a game to him?
But these are just two characters in our little play named 'Soldat R/S'. Obviously, Soldat is more than just a game to me. It's more than just a game to Strider, too. We pay $24.50 a month for both the servers for you guys to play on. That's almost $300 a year, that we're forking out of our own pockets. People don't realize that at that point, it's no longer a game, it's an investment. Or a hobby. Something, but it's double the cost of my health insurance a year.
And yet, despite that fact, I still get whines and complaints. I mean, I'm not even obligated to admin my own server. Sure, I pay for it, but does that mean I actually gotta' take care of it too? Look at the old n8v servers. IO banned pretty much whoever the hell he wanted, and didn't put up any rules. That's fine. DS could be that kind of server too. But I actually wanted a place where rules were kept and stuff.
--> I AM NOT OBLIGATED TO LISTEN TO YOUR COMPLAINTS <--
But I get very little appreciation for the work that's put out. Restarting the servers at almost any given time during the day.
But here's the general gist of the complaints I get:
"Ice, please unban me." Reasons? "I was vote kicked." "Someone banned me, I don't know who." "I was ping kicked." "I don't know what happened." But I mean.. WTF? How do I know you're just not trying to weasel your way out of an admin ban from before?
"Ice, I want/need more spectator slots." Ok. If you want to pay for the spectator slots, sure. But I get this one a lot for some reason. I don't have any idea why you'd need more spectator slots.
"Ice, wtf, take the f*cking stationary guns out." Dude. The only reason you're whining is because you're getting killed by them. Who's fault is that? If you get shot by a stat gun, it's your own damn fault. Don't stand where someone can hit you. It's the same with ANY weapon. If you don't want to get hit by a car, don't play in the street. COMMON SENSE PEOPLE.
"Put CS maps on server rotation for public!" I don't like CS maps. Everyone knows that. If they don't, they should by now. But even then, it's my server. If you want CS maps, go play somewhere else. I have them on private because of popular demand, but don't tell me to change my own server because YOU want CS maps, because YOU suck at regular maps.
"Ice, come kick/ban this guy." Ok. I can do that, but most people who ask me to.. HAVEN'T EVEN TRIED TO VOTE KICK YET.
"Ice, someone's hacking in the server." I go in there, I don't see a damn thing. I always say take a demo, for proof. But does anyone do it? NO.
"I want admin, gimmie admin, I'll be a good admin, I follow rulez pls." I give admin to people of good repute. Or at least, of people I think have good repute. If you don't have admin, it's probably because I don't want you to have admin. If you ask once, and get a no, don't ask again. Don't spam my PM box. Don't mass IM me on AIM. Don't email me. The more you irritate me, the less you might get admin.
"SO-AND-SO BANNED ME, HE ADMIN ABUSE, TAKE HIS ADMIN AWAY, HE SUX" Refer to the above. If you got banned, it's probably because you deserve it.
"This guy is being a b*tch in game. He keeps insulting me and stuff." You know what? I'm usually happy to come in and stop it. But I get in there, and it's not just a one way insult. You're just insulting him back. YOU'RE NOT HELPING. What do you want me to do? Ban him for being a pr*ck? Ok, so if I ban him for insults, do I ban you too?
These are just a few of the MANY IMs I get a day. I mean, what the hell? I'm not a baby sitter.
You know, the funny thing is, most of the complaints I get are from players who are CONSTANT RULE BREAKERS. Oh! About rule breaking. You know, in all seriousness, if it didn't ban 90% of the players that played in my servers, I'd instate a 'no cursing' rule. But yanno' what? Apparently a lot of people struggle with words more than five letters long. Oh wait. n*gg*r is six letters long. And EVERYONE knows how to use that.
But back to the point. Soldat drama. I even have people come to me and talk about their real life problems. Which, again, I'm happy to listen to. But at the end, when I try to suggest something, it's "NO I DON'T WANT TO CHANGE I WANT WHATEVER'S HAPPENING TO ME TO CHANGE. BUT I'LL KILL MYSELF BECAUSE I CAN"T DEAL WITH IT." Adapt!
Another thing, people against people. I know there's lots of people who dislike me. I know this. I can even name a few. I can even bring up logs where they've smack talked me behind my back on MY servers. And then, there's people who hate the people that kiss my ass. I know there's some of those too. But there's a point where smack talking becomes so immature and petty. Russel hates Deadeye. I dislike most of the people who frequent the vent server. You know who you are.
And then we have hackers. HACKERS. I'd KILL whoever made the soldat no-recoil/realistic hacks. I swear I would. And yet, we have hackers. Ever hear about the Red Scare? It's where americans used to call each other communists, and suddenly, the entire community turned against them. Look at how many people's reputations were completely ruined becauce they were called a hacker. Lovesound, for example. I don't believe he ever hacked. Maybe I just didn't catch him. Then, he wanted to start over, and started playing on Tim. Everyone was cool with Tim. Nobody thought Tim hacked. Until they found out he was Lovesound. Suddenly.. "OMFG TIM HAX" when you can totally tell he doesn't. WTF.
Why hack on Soldat anyway? There's the people who use fly hacks, etc, who are just messing around. But you got the people who use no recoil/realistic, to win. They think they're such hot sh*t. But it's just a game, right? Who cares, right? I care. If I say no hacking in my server, there better be no hacking there. 90% of the community hates hackers anyway. Stay the hell away.
If Soldat is such a game, why do people feel bad when they lose? Or get angry when they lose? We all know there's people like that. Just as much as people are elated when they win. If something's 'just' anything to you, it usually doesn't effect your emotions.
To get to the point.. just don't do anything unless you can help it. If you complain about something, try to do something about it first. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it.
I think one of the problems is, people think they can say/do anything online, because nothing will happen to them RL. Their little life goes on, and their online life doesn't have anything to do with it. There needs to be ethics online. I think you should be as accountable for your actions online as you are in real life.
