I'd probably use something like this, but I only use msn and aim, and msn I connect to with mIRC (I could connect to icq with mIRC too, but I don't use icq), so aim is my only standalone chat software.

Yes, Meebo lets you sign on about 1+ aim/msn/etc accounts at the same time.
Meebo = Browser Messaging Trillian/Gaim/etc = Client Messaging

"seem" being the key word. Nah, people often exaggerate about just how bad it is. But other browsers are much better for safety/security.

IE is only bad because around 80% of people use it. So therefore it becomes a bigger target for hackers.

Hmm
IE6 could use more security, but it's alright for safe sites. Just try to avoid the "not-so-safe" sites, it's really that simple.
IE7 is much more secure but it's too bloated and doesn't fully support many sites using specific css templates.
Firefox, this has got to be the most bloated pos i've ever used. It takes up crap loads of ram, has many useless features and the only thing good about it is the fact that its popup and ad blocking features are above par, which makes it a trophy for going to harmful sites but a failure for general use.
